Floppy Hat Farms is a start-up small production farm that was started in 2015 by Rachel Tinker-Kulberg, PhD in collaboration with Piedmont farmer Doug Jones. With over 40 years of combined farming experience and after hundreds of field trials, only the best-tasting and highest-performing vegetable varieties available on the market are chosen. Dr Rachel Kulberg’s daughter Kendra is also a valued member of the farming team- a natural entrepreneur, she will be introducing her own line of locally sourced handmade crocheted and knitted products this winter!
The mission of Floppy Hat Farms is to farm sustainably for the health of people and the environment ~ Sustainable and Beyond Organic~ No synthetic pesticides or GMOs are ever used! Rachel started Floppy Hat Farms because she believes that thru the development of healthy food systems that ultimately protect our natural resources, the root causes of health disparities and environmental degradation can start to be tackled. Hence why she supports sustainable agriculture methods like Organic Soil-based Farming, as well as cutting-edge Aquaponics- an eco-friendly farming practice that integrates the growth of fish with vegetable production.
To improve nutrition thru diet diversity and revitalize our local food system, Rachel puts great effort into growing nutritionally-rich non-traditional and/or indigenous crops for her customers (e.g. Chinese Water Spinach, Asian collards, Amaranth, Lambsquarter, Medicinal herbs to name a few). She also has worked with NCAT, Duke, Durham Tech, Abundance Foundation, Healing w/ CAARE and other local non-profits & K-12 schools to create educational workshops and symposiums in order to promote community-based improved nutrition and health as a basis for social, economic, and environmental justice. In her spare time, Rachel also designs, builds, and maintains natural waterscape ponds and hobby scale indoor/outdoor Aquaponic growing systems!
Floppy Hat Farms has two principle locations: The Breeze Enterprise Farm in Hurdle Mills, Nc & Healing with CAARe in Durham, Nc. Please visit our website to learn more- group tours, school field trips, educational workshops, and consultancy services are offered throughout the year!
